Principle
For a accurate cytological diagnosis, the perfect fixation of the material is a requirement. To avoid the dry up and shrink of cells, obtain structural characteristics and enable a clear staining and differentiation,the fixation of the swabs must be executed directly after the collection when still moist. If the fixation of the material happens too late, there are what is called artifacts in the Papanicolaous-stained specimen on individual cells and mass cells. These appear as brown, granular formations and can complicate the diagnostic in case of increased appearance.
